But how could they not get confused, with names like Dowagiac, Hamtramck and Kitch-iti-kipi in our midst? Plus, we pronounce a few common words, such as Charlotte, Milan and Orion, a bit\u2026differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bois Blanc<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This first one has managed to cause quite the controversy amongst Michiganders. Most know it as \u201cboys blank,\u201d while others insist it is \u201cboys blonk.\u201d However, most just refer to this island in the Straits of Mackinac as \u201cbob-low,\u201d which avoids the debate altogether!<\/p>\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n

Charlotte<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This charming small town just southwest of Lansing is not like the city of the same name in North Carolina. Most notably, it\u2019s pronounced differently \u2014 as \u201cchar-LOT,\u201d as opposed to \u201cchar-lit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n

Charlevoix<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Situated along the shores of Lake Michigan on the northwest corner of the Lower Peninsula, Charlevoix has been tripping up visitors with its French name. But Michiganders know it is pronounced \u201cshar-luh-voy!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Is it \u201cdoe-wag-eye-ak?\u201d \u201cDow-wag-ee-ak?\u201d Neither! This small city in southwest Michigan is pronounced \u201cdoe-WAH-jak!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Ewing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

While it\u2019s tempting to say \u201cew-ing,\u201d there is nothing \u201cew\u201d about this small township in the Upper Peninsula. It starts with a \u201cy\u201d sound and is pronounced \u201cYOO-ing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n

Gaylord<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Believe it or not, this northern Michigan city is pronounced \u201cgay-lerd\u201d \u2014 not the typical \u201cgay-lord!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Grosse Ile<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This township (containing an island of the same name) south of Detroit is fairly straightforward. You guessed \u201cgross\u201d correctly! But the second word is pronounced \u201ceel\u201d \u2014 making it \u201cgross eel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Hamtramck<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cmck\u201d sound at the end of this small city just outside Detroit has thrown people off over the years. But Michiganders don\u2019t bat an eye, sounding it out as \u201cham-tram-ick\u201d with an invisible \u201ci\u201d in the last syllable.<\/p>\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n

Houghton<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It may be tempting to make a \u201chaw\u201d sound at the sight of this charming town at the northern tip of the Upper Peninsula. But it is in fact pronounced \u201cHOE-tin!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Keweenaw<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The state\u2019s northernmost county, Keweenaw County, is also the state\u2019s largest by total area (when the waters of Lake Superior are included) as well as the least populated. And Michiganders know it\u2019s pronounced \u201cKEE-win-awe,\u201d with the long \u201ce\u201d sound in the first syllable, not the second.<\/p>\n\n\n

Kitch-iti-kipi<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Get the pronunciation of this stunning natural spring down so you can spend more time enjoying its splendor. Pronounced \u201ckitch-itty-kip-ee,\u201d Kitch-iti-kipi is Michigan\u2019s largest freshwater spring measuring 200 feet across and 40 feet deep. It is a popular destination best admired via observational raft, as swimming and fishing are not allowed. Stumbling over the name? Don\u2019t worry \u2014 you can just call it \u201cMirror of Heaven,\u201d the nickname given by ancient Chippewas. And once you see its bright teal waters, you\u2019ll understand why!<\/p>\n\n\n

Lake Gogebic<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Believe it or not, Lake Gogebic, the largest inland lake in the Upper Peninsula, is pronounced \u201cgoh-GHIB-ik!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Lake Orion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Of course we had to complicate things by not pronouncing it like the constellation. Pronounced \u201clake oh-ree-en,\u201d Lake Orion is a village in the northern outskirts of Metro Detroit along a lake with the same name.<\/p>\n\n\n

Mackinac<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

You will immediately be pegged as a tourist if you pronounce this idyllic island that doesn\u2019t allow cars or chain hotels as \u201cmack-in-ack.\u201d Michiganders know the correct pronunciation is \u201cmack-in-awe!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Milan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Forget about the pronunciation of the Italian city! The small city of Milan, Michigan is pronounced \u201cmy-LINN.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

The \u201cqu\u201d sound in this name has a tendency to trip everyone up. And Ocqueoc is the name of several landmarks in Michigan, including Ocqueoc Township, the Ocqueoc River, and Ocqueoc Falls, the largest waterfall in the Lower Peninsula. For all three, it is pronounced \u201cAH-key-ock!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Okemos<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This Lansing suburb doesn\u2019t have a \u201ckey\u201d sound, as many assume. It is actually pronounced \u201cOH-kuh-muss.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n

Onekama<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This small village along the shore of Lake Michigan is pronounced \u201coh-neck-em-uh.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Emphasis is key when it comes to this charming village in the northern shoreline of the Upper Peninsula. It\u2019s pronounced \u201con-te-NAH-gen,\u201d with an emphasis on the \u201cnah\u201d syllable.<\/p>\n\n\n

Sault Ste. Marie<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

You have to be a local to know how to correctly say the name of Michigan\u2019s oldest town. It is actually pronounced \u201csue saint marie\u201d \u2014 not \u201csalt!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

 <\/p>\n\n\n

Sebewaing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Known as the Sugar Beet Capital, Sebewaing sure has a lot of vowels (including a silent \u201ca\u201d at the end), but Michiganders know it is properly pronounced \u201csee-buh-wing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Ypsilanti<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Stick out like a sore thumb if you pronounce the \u201cy\u201d at the beginning of Ypsilanti<\/a>, an artsy city just down the road from us here in Ann Arbor.<\/a> Instead, pretend the \u201cy\u201d isn\u2019t there and call it \u201cip-sill-ANN-tee.\u201d Overwhelmed? Shorten it to \u201cYpsi\u201d like a true local.<\/p>\n\n\n
